Digital and Traditional Marketing

Traditional marketing has basically remained unchanged for several decades. Throughout history, trading has been based on different marketing methods. Modern marketing has been known for about a hundred years, of which digital marketing only became a part much later. The explosive growth of internet use has created a completely new platform as part of companies marketing, and its share as part of companies’ marketing is growing at a constant pace. Because the change has been so significant, this type of marketing wanted to be given a separate name, and digital marketing, or digital marketing, has become more widely used.

The turning point of digital marketing can perhaps be considered the period after the 21st century, when social media, google and various online stores have fundamentally changed the use of the internet. In this sense, digital marketing is the same marketing where a company or another organization tries to promote the sale of its products or services.

However, digital marketing makes a clear difference in how it is presented and to whom it is targeted. It is also important to understand that traditional marketing has only worked in one direction, while digital marketing interacts more closely with consumers. Forms of digital marketing directly connected to the website include, for example, content production, search engine optimization, content marketing, conversion optimization, marketing automation and analytics.

The methods and technologies related to digital marketing are a very broad category and sometimes they partially overlap with more traditional marketing. Most commonly, when talking about digital marketing, you come across different terms, such as websites, search engine optimization, keyword advertising, content marketing and social media marketing. Examples of digital marketing applications are presented below.

A well-functioning website reaches potential customers and sells them products and services. Today, a website also strongly reflects a company’s image, so it also has a special meaning in image advertising. Since websites are such a common part of society today, many people don’t even think of websites as marketing. However, websites are key tools for digital marketing and in some cases the entire business can be based around the website. A large part of digital marketing methods is also directly or partially linked to the existence of various websites.

The goal of SEO is to get free traffic to websites using search engines. However, search engine optimization, or actually search engine visibility, is a vague part of digital marketing in that sense, because it is not necessarily directly about any single function. Sometimes the thing happens as if by itself along with other activities, but sometimes special attention can be paid to it separately.
