Mallorca is one of the Mediterranean’s most popular holiday islands and a favorite among when booking their summer holiday. The island has a wide range of activities and offers for most types of travelers and also offers some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean.
Mallorca is located in the Mediterranean Sea and is the largest of the Balearic Islands outside mainland Spain. The island’s main industry is, and has been since the 50s, tourism. There have been traces of settlements as far back as 6000 BC. Year 123 BC Mallorca was occupied by the Romans and two cities were established, of which Palmeria (city of Palma) and Pollemntia (Alcúdia) were the two most important. Later, Mallorca has been invaded by conquerors from both North Africa and the Eastern Empire and has been besieged by both Italians, Berbers and not least various kings of Aragón (today Spain).
Majorca’s main industry today is tourism, but previously mainly consisted of the production of olive oil and wine as well as salt mining. The disused mines are today popular excursion destinations among tourists. Majorca’s holiday resorts have something for every taste. If you are looking for a cool and lively nightlife, Palmanova/Magaluf are excellent, while the beach favorite Alcúdia is the family’s first choice with its pleasant white sandy beach and which has been named one of the best in the Mediterranean. Palma City is like a mini-Barcelona and perfectly suited as a big city destination.
In addition to this, you cannot mention Mallorca without mentioning the many charming resorts such as Cala d’Or, Cala Millor, Santa Ponsa and Illetas which are quiet seaside resorts that are perfect for anyone who wants to relax. In other words, the vast majority choose a holiday resort on the coast, but it is absolutely worth taking a trip to one of the island’s beautiful and old mountain villages, perhaps the most famous is the cultural heritage town of Valdemossa, which many consider Mallorca’s most beautiful village.
The airport in Mallorca is located just outside the city of Palma and is one of the busiest in Spain. There are daily connections with several airports, mainly during the summer but also during the winter, although with a lower frequency.
The summer season (and swimming season) lasts from early May to mid-October and the most popular months to travel are June, July and August. It can also be nice to visit Mallorca in the winter, but then first and foremost for all those looking for an active holiday with, for example, golf and cycling. It may then be worth choosing accommodation near the city of Palma as the other holiday resorts can be experienced as quite deserted outside the summer season.
